The Town of Fort Sheridan is a unique residential North Shore community where vintage 19th century architecture is served by the latest 21st century plan. The site of Fort Sheridan was originally a French trading post around 1670, and became a small village named St. John’s about 1840, before becoming a military base about 1886. The development of the 135-acre Army base into a residential community within a federally designated historic district demanded site sensitivity embodying the beliefs of O.C. Simonds, the fort’s original landscape architect. Simonds advocated the pleasing landscape visions incorporating natural themes. When Jacobs/Ryan Associates was asked to revitalize the site in 2001, it became the mission of Jacobs/Ryan Associates work with the design team to envision the landscape beauty through the eyes of Simonds.

This private dwelling is actually the building where cannons were housed at the former Fort Sheridan military base. Jacobs/Ryan Associates provided complete landscape architectural design services for this residence including such items as an arbor, paving, fencing and gates with limestone piers, planting, lighting, and irrigation. The front garden is at the main entry to the house and includes a circle lawn edged with lush ornamental tree, shrub and perennial plantings punctuated by a brick and bluestone walk leading to the front door. Lush plantings and a recessed seating area create intimate spaces for conversation in the rear gardens. Climbing roses soften a natural wood arbor that lends an implied enclosure to the naturalistic landscape. A variety of pavings flow through the different gathering areas, giving each their own identity. Lounge chairs are set at the edge of the property in a small meadow of grass, providing a space for unrestricted relaxation. Jacobs/Ryan Associates received the 2005 Illinois Chapter, American Society of Landscape Architect’s President’s award of excellence in residential design for this project and was featured in Architectural Digest Magazine (February 2002).
